As I am sure you are aware, the number of camelids in the UK, particularly alpacas, has increased rapidly in the last few years.
This means that vets who have little experience of dealing with these animals are frequently asked to attend. Please pass on these details if you think your vet might be interested.
The BVCS is always happy to offer help or advice and the membership fee is deliberately kept as low as possible (currently £20/year, including conference proceedings and access to the e-mail discussion group) to encourage all vets or students to join.
Practical workshops as well as topical matters will be covered during our forthcoming conference:
The British Veterinary Camelid Society is an informal group of vets, researchers and other professionals with a particular interest in camelids.
Each year the BVCS organises a conference with in depth lectures from a principal guest speaker as well as time for members to present research findings, other reports or interesting cases from their own experience.
The programme includes hands on practical sessions as well as discussions and debate.
As there is a lot of interest in alpacas in the West Country, the 2008 conference will be based in the Plymouth area. It will be held from the 16th to 19th October, with practical sessions kindly hosted by Popham Alpacas.
Our guest speaker will be Dr William Vivanco, head of genetic resources and biotechnology at the Peruvian National Institute of Agricultural Research in Lima. He is a leader in the development of techniques such as embryo technology, and has much to share with us, including the latest advances in selective breeding for colour, a goal of many alpaca owners in the UK.
The conference will start with a practical session covering general welfare and handling issues on Thursday afternoon. Although particularly aimed at those who may be relatively new to camelid care, this workshop is also popular with regular attendees. More advanced practical issues will be covered in a second session on Saturday, led by Dr Vivanco. In addition to the formal programme there will be plenty of opportunities for socializing and enjoying the facilities at the conference venue and we aim to finish the weekend with lunch on Sunday.
